Tractor Repair: IH 444 farm tractor electrical, starter solenoid, blown fuse

Question
I have a 1969 or 1970 IH 444 that stopped running while I was using it. There is fuel. When I turn the key I can hear the fuel pump ticking but when I push the start button, there is nothing. I am guessing the problem is an electrical one. Is there a fuse panel where  I should check for a blown fuse? Or might it be the safety switch that is connected to the clutch lever that keeps the engine from starting unless the clutch is depressed? Just seems odd to have it stop while it was running and then not be able to even turn it over.

Answer
Hello,

I doubt that there is a fuse causing the problem, and if there was, I don't know where the fuse would be located.  I sounds more like a wiring problem.  From the start button, power goes through the clutch safety switch to the starter solenoid.  If there is no power to the small S terminal on the solenoid, then check the wiring and safety switch.  A test light or volt meter will tell you where you have power and where you don't so that you can narrow it down where the problem is.  Check for broken wires or corroded harness connectors.
