Tractor Repair: Ford 6600 Power Steering, ford 6600, hydraulic fluid

Question
Hi
The power steering is starting to fail/is intermittent. Is it the pump and how do I check the fluid level?

I have just topped up the transmission /hydraulic fluid as it was quite low due to leaks in the forklift rams that attach to the front of the tractor. I am not sure if the power steering is driven by the main transmission/hydraulic fluid supply.

Your advice is much appreciated.

Answer
Hello,

Unless yours is different, all the Fords I have seen have a reservoir attached right on the power steering pump on the side of the engine.  It probably is low on fluid.  Fill the reservoir with hydraulic oil, run the tractor and turn the front wheels all the way to each side a few times to get any air out, then shut it off and refill to about 1/2 inch below the filler opening.  There is also a filter inside the reservoir that might need to be replaced.
