QUESTION: Sorry for my omission. The vehicle is a 1975 Dolomite Sprint to which I have just fitted a Magnetronic electronic ignition and quartz halogen headlights (with appropriate relay - came with kit). When the engine is running the tacho returns to a normal reading with only a "blip" on traffictor flash. Thankyou for your time and knowledge, it is appreciated.

Answer
I don't have any Dolomite Sprint experience nor any info on them as they were not imported here in the US. However, I may be able to aim you in the correct direction to correct your problem. I believe you have a high resistance in either your power supply or the ground system. So here is a sure method to find out which.

Take a long heavy wire like a 12 gauge wire and connect one end to the battery connect the other end to the 12v power supply at the tach. (not to the trigger wire from the ignition, only the 12v power connection) This will eliminate any resistance in the power circuit to the tach and if it still jumps do this.

This is especially important if the turn signal warning lights are in the instrument cluster. Move your 12 gauge wire over to the negative terminal of the battery (ground) and take the other end and connect it to the metal case of the tach and try it again. This will test the ground circuit.

If this corrects the problem you need to test the grounds on the tail lamps and parking lamps, front and rear. Especially if this only happen after the rear lamp lens repair.

let me know,
