Triumph Repair: 73 Spitfie Rearend, ring and pinion gear, spider gears

Question
Howard- I have been noticing a noise in the rear end that sounds like I have rocks in the tires when I drive.  A sort of rhythmic clicking sound.  Last night when I was driving I noticed that it sped up a bit when I put the clutch in.  I am hoping that this is not the differential but don't know where to start.  I also checked the U joint and found a little play in the driveshaft.  The play was not coming from the joint but rather in the rear end.  Any thoughts will be very appreciated.
Thanks, Ross

Answer
Hi Ross,
Unfortunately it is an indication you need to open up the differential and closely examine everything inside, ring and pinion gear teeth, spider gears, and all bearings.
Removal and opening up is just mechanics work and you can do it with most service manuals. Examination of the gear teeth for a chipped or broken tooth is also easy and is something you can do. However, you should find an experienced mechanic who has set up differentials to replace a ring and pinion gear set or even bearings. A spider gear problem can be done with a good service manual. You should not attempt any other internal repair without a good manual.
