Triumph Repair: 1975 TR6 Steering Column, steering column, tr6

Question
Hi Scott,

Recently purchasd a 1975 TR6 with 70K miles and there seems to be about a 3/4" play on the steering column.  While sitting in the car, you can actually pull the steering wheel towards you approx. 3/4".  Under the hood, the play seems to be very close to the firewall.  Not sure if a bushing is missing.  Have you ever come across this??

Answer
If the play is in/out, then I would check the break-away coupling between the firewall and the bottom of the steering column tube;  That slip clamp can come loose or wear.

Also check the rubber coupler in the engine compartment; they typically rot.

If the play is radial, then the bushings inside the column are worn and need replacing.

Hope that helps.
