UK Car Repair: Re-commissioning a 1977 XJ Series 2 V12, starter relay, negative battery

Question
Have bought new spark plugs, HT leads, fuel filter, oil filter, new oil, a new battery, fitted them all go to turn the key and results are mixed:
No activity from engine just clicking noise.
Electrics (windows, heater etc) seem okay but no warning lights on dash, no activity from dials except Voltmeter.
What do you think ?

P.S. Where is the starter motor ?
Cheers

Answer
starter is on flywheel side of engine, a big red wire goes to it :P

-
Check all the engine earths, they are likely rotten. (Try a jump lead from the negative battery terminal to the engine metal.. if it works the earths are duff)
-
No joy => Wire the solenoid directly to Positive, if the starter cranks the engine then check the ignition switch and starter relay for continuity.

--EDIT--

- Also remove and CLEAN (sandpaper) all switches, fuses connectors etc.. jags are prone to damp and damp ruins electrics (some of my previous answers go into great detail on cleaning up electrical contacts)

PS I can get you original jaguar wiring diagrams if they would be of use??
