UK Car Repair: mgb stalls out, god status, mgoc

Question
Greetings William!

I have a problem that my '74 MGB U.S. model will on occasion stall for no apparent reason. 1800 cc engine, changed for the HS4 carbs, they seem to be well synched, ignitor electronic ignition, 40k sport coil. she starts up without a problem and will then run and idle fine for a while, but every now and again, while idling, the engine will start to shudder, RPMs and pressure drop and she'll stall out - or i have to pump the pedal/pull the choke to keep her going and then smell a lot of gas. i've checked the fuel lines, replaced the fuel pump (old lucas points pump went bad - replaced with mgoc spares modern electronic pump), will replace the fuel filter as soon as they get them back in stock, just put in new plugs (NGK BP6ES  instead of champions following a recommendation) gapped to 0.032. the stalling only happens (of course) when idling or coming down from speed to stop at a red light/toll booth/attractive hitchhiker. ok, maybe not that last one. i switched the coil back to the standard coil and regapped the plugs to 0.025, but had the same problem. the other odd thing is that after it stalls out, i can hear the fuel pump ticking away until the engine is primed again.

a solution would give you god status in my book, because this is becoming a bit annoying.

thanks endlessly!!!

Answer
Well you seem to have done everything!  It does though sound like a fuel problem, I would tend to check two areas. First is the carb bowl breather system, make sure there is an actual vent for the bowls, they have to be open to atmosphere.  Then I would check the fuel line back to the pump.  There may be a loose connection which would allow air to be sucked in, that could be why you continue to hear the pump operate, let me know.
