UK Car Repair: timing belt snap on vauxhall vectra 1.8 arctic 1998 5 door petrol, vauxhall vectra, camshaft timing

Question
I've had a new head and valves and its been machined. having trouble with the timing. Haynes manual seems to be wrong and I'm not getting anywhere fast, still won't start but its trying too.

Answer
I do not have the timing data to hand, see if you can get it from the place you purchased thwe belt!  Otherwise you need to set the crankshsaft on TDC and confirm it by checking the piston is in fact on TDC compression, -(we do this by feeling it rising with a straw).  Now you have to see if the camshaft timing marks are aligned. Both valves for no 1 cylinder should be completely closed- ie, there shoild be clearance between the valve and the arm.
