Volkswagen Repair: Transmission will not shift out of park, volkswagon jetta, brake light switch

Question
I have a 2000 Volkswagon Jetta with an automatic transmission.  When I start out it will shift ok , but after a while, when stopped it will not let you move the shifter out of park. When the engine is not running and the key is on accessory you can move the shifter to any spot, but when you turn on the engine it will lock up again.  Is there some sensor problem or something?

Answer
Hi Rand;
There is a brake light switch that needs to be replaced.  Call your local Volkswagen dealer with your vehicle identification number, and they might just tell you to bring it in for a free repair.  This is a current customer good will campaign that is called, "N4."  Just ask if your car qualifies for the N4 campaign.  Hope this helps.  Good luck.
