Volkswagen Repair: Shifter Linkage, oxnard st, shift linkage

Question
I have a 91 Passat. It's a 4 cyl, 5 speed. The end of the shift cable to the tranny is missing, it fell off.I need to replace the cable.I have the linkage disconnected from the tranny and I took the clamp off the cable and I have it disconnected from the shifter. When I try to pull the whole cable through the engine compartment it seems to get hung up. I can reach back behind the engine and I don't feel anything that could be holdng it but there is something. How do I pull the cable through the engine compartment tp replace it.
Thanks

Answer
You are going to have to disconnect the shift linkage from the shifter. You must remove the exaust pipe and heat shield from the bottom of the car. You must access the shifter from underneath the car. I am Max's German CAr located at 15020 Oxnard st Van  Nuys CA 91411. I have this shift cable for $75 used plus shipping. i take credit cards.
