Volkswagen Repair: 71 VW Van, air impact wrench, propane torch

Question
Replacing the lugs on the front of the van.  My son stripped 2 of them taking the rim off to paint it.  I tried to remove a lug without any success.  Do I need to take off the hub to remove the lugs.  The van has disc brakes in the front.
Thank You, Lou Steiner

Answer
Lou, thank you for your question.  First, the rotor with the striped holes will probably have to be replaced.  As far as the others, use Liquid wrench or WD-40 to loosen up the lugs.  Then you may have to apply heat from a propane torch (the liquid wrench or WD40 WILL catch fire!) , so do this in a well ventilated area preferably outside, and then let it cool down.  You should be able to take the rest off.  You may have to use a “break over bar” and a steel pipe to loosen then lugs off.  It sounds like who ever put the lugs on used an air impact wrench and exceeded the 95 psi rating.
Hope that helps
