Volkswagen Repair: car wont turn over, vw jetta gli, vw jetta

Question
1988 vw jetta Gli 16v. 300,000 miles  Los Angeles, ca
I believe that I may have ran out of can.  I park my car backwards on an incline.  I tried starting my car and it would not turn over.  Thinking that I might be out of gas, I made the car level and added 1.5 gallons of gas.  It still would not turn over.  I tried pumping the gas, letting it sit and not pump while starting.  I've have tried so many times that now the battery if getting low. If I did run out of gas, do I need to do anything else but add gas. It has fuel injectors.  Any ideas.  I have been using the car all day.

Answer
Larry,

You say the car won't turn over? But if the battery is getting low, it must be turning over, but not starting?

Put in more gas 1.5 gal may not be enough... fill it to 1/4 tank.

Do you hear the fuel pump running? You may have burned it out trying to start without fuel.  It needs the fuel to lubricate it.

Is you fuel filter old and dirty? Running out of gas will cause any dirt in the tank to get sucked into the system.

Good luck,

Paul
