Volkswagen Repair: Volkswagen door, vw beetle, door latch

Question
Hi Paul, I have a 1999 VW Beetle that has a problem with the door latch. Sometimes it will latch and sometimes it won't. I just wonder if you know how these doors operate? The car has automatic locks and I'm wondering if this may have something to do with the latching because there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the door itself. Thanks in advance, Linda

Answer
Linda,

I'm not familiar with the Beetle door handles, but VW's have a problem with rust.  With the door open spray some WD40 into the lock, and trip it closed with a screwdriver, then release it by activating the handle. You may need to help it release with a little nudge with the screwdriver.
Repeat this a few times and take note of the amount of rust, if this frees up the lock lubricate it with some engine oil.

Good luck,

Paul
