Volkswagen Repair: 2000 VW Bug Warning lights, water coolant, coolant system

Question
For past month the temperature guage beeps & is red for the first 30 seconds after starting car in morning.  Thereafter it changes to blue, then eventually goes off.  I can see water/coolant mix in the reservoir, so I believe it has water.

Also, per the manual, the coolant system on these cars is sealed and never needs changing.  Is that correct?  Also, do they require a special type of coolant?  And is the reservoir the place to put it?  I've searched, but I don't see a radiator cap anywhere.

Answer
With having one, I'm making logical guesses and relating to other vehicles....On the reservoir front you will(should) see upper and lower level marks.  Make sure your fluid is to the lower level mark on a cold engine(overnight).  If it is not, make it so, because one of those ideas they got, they put a low level warning light on the dash which was indicated by a red light.  Not that the fluid was gone, just that it was lower than they like.  As your engine heats up, the coolant expands and rises in the reservoir so the light goes out.  It is a good idea to keep the coolant to the correct level as these cars are nasty to refill if you are down a long way as you must fill the upper rad hose first and then the reservoir so that fluid is on both sides of the thermostat otherwise it will not open.
The coolant goes into the reservoir.  Alunimum friendly standard antifreeze from walmart will do.
The manual states the coolant never needs changing?  THEY don't make the fluid.  Besides, part of your maintenance procedures is to remove the rad hoses to inspect the interior of the hoses for deterioration which does occur.      I have no idea why they have a blue light except blue to me means cold.  Figures, it's greek.
