Volvo Repair: Fuel Pump??? recent iac issue..., engine cranks, fuel pump relay

Question
First off, thank you very very much roger for giving up your time to people like me on the Internet, I appreciate your help SO much.

About a week ago my 1996 Volvo 960 wagon began to stall when sitting at a light, or just idling. As the day progressed, the stalls happened more often, and became increasingly more sudden. Soon after, I would try to accelerate, and it didn't do ANYTHING, then all the sudden, the throttle would "catch" and I would roar forward. I cleaned my IAC valve, the best I could with q-tips and a toothbrush, and the problem PRETTY much went away. My RPM's still quiver from 750-850 when idling however. I have been told to expect this for a while after cleaning the IAC.

The day I fixed my IAC, the engine ran flawlessly(save the RPM issue). No stalls, no rough idling, nothing.

I am driving down the road, at about 35 mph, and the car doesn't let me accelerate. Suddenly, my car starts dropping rpms, with no apparent stuttering. I pull onto a side-street and let the car drop to about 750 rpm before I kill the engine. I try to start the car, engine cranks, but I can't hear what I *think* are the fuel injectors, and upon turning the key, I can't hear the fuel pump.

I MIGHT have burned it out, I have been running it on less than 7 galons a day for...months...

What should I check on my car? The fuel pump? relay? And how do I know if they are bad? What do I use to test each thing?

Answer
Mark, you wont hear the injectors but you will hear the pump.  The relay you can check by just cranking the car and feeling if it will click or not.  you can run power to the fuel pump to see if its good.  Other than that, I would have to do my own tests to see whats going on.  Roger
