Volvo Repair: fuel system, air mass, fuel pressure

Question
I have a 89 740 gl, I was driving home the other day and the vehicle acted as if it wasn't getting any fuel. It kept on "dying" down to really low rpm's, until finally it died completely. This has happen once before too, but I just started it up again and went on my way. I checked the fuel pump and fuel flows fine when when I try to start it. I also tasted the fuel, and it seems like there is some kind of oily additive in the fuel. I then drained all but about 1 1/2 gallons of the fuel out and added one "clean" gallon. I then tried to start it ensuring that fuel had time to replenish the lines, and the vehicle still won't start. Is there anything I can do??

Answer
You need to check the fuel pressure and pressure regulator. Also try unplugging the Air Mass Meter and try to start it, it'll run rough but those are high failure components. How much fuel is in it? Less than a quaerter tank could prevent the in tank pump from picking up the fuel. What is condition of spark, should be a bright blue or white not a weak yellow, may have a bad coil. Could also have a bad dist cap and rotor.
