Volvo Repair: 1984 volvo 245 sedan, volvo 245, silver meter

Question
Hi Roger,
We are trying to determine the cause of a problem that maybe you are familiar with.  Our 84 volvo 245 DL is unable to run at low rpm's without dying.  In fact, it barely is able to start.  It will start and run if the accelerator pedal is 'feathered' gradually to build up the rpm's.  Once the engine is 'reved up' it will run at the high level of rpm's but as soon as the rpm's drop to <1500 it dyes.  When the key is turned to ignition/start the engine will start and then quickly die unless the given that gradual 'feathering up' of the accelerator.  I have replaced the fuel filter @ the undercarriage mount located under the rear seat. Still have the same issue. Yes, there is plenty of gas in the tank.  In the past month, I poured a bottle of fuel additive into the tank to clean out the fuel system.  The fuel pump is considerably noisier than on my other volvo.  Do you think I'm looking at replacing the fuel pump?  Is there a second pump inside the fuel tank on this model or could there be some other in line filter that needs to be cleaned/replaced?
Thanks,
Terry

Answer
Terry, first clane and adjust the throtle body.  Secondly, unplug the air mass meter and see if car will idle better.  Once it starts surging, plug it back in.  If car dies, then you need a new meter.  Remember one thing though, Only 83-84 cars have the silver meter.  NO other meter will exchange with this meter.  Dont let parts people talk you into it.  Roger
