Volvo Repair: Broken Timing Belt 740GLE, volvo engines, timing belt

As we were stopped in traffic our timing belt gave out on our 89 740 GLE sedan. I did not hear any metal to metal contact at the moment the belt gave. I have heard that some volvo engines may still be salvaged even after a timing belt break, like on 240 models. Is this true??

Charles, if your engine is NOT the DOHC 16v engine then you are okay.  If it is a 16v might as well throw the car away or convert it over to a regular 4 cylinder.  If you try to repair the 16v engine (which was never a good engine in the first place) then you will be spending a few thousand dollars in repairs. Cheaper and better in the long run to convert to normal 4 cylinder.  We have done it before.  Roger
