Question -
My guy likes volvo wagons, 122s, 240s and is thinking about a turbo wagon, but is concerned the turbos are more trouble than they're worth.
Question is: Which series & year of turbo wagons are the most reliable, in your experience & opinion, that would be the lower cost per vehicle mile for a turbo wagon?   240, 940 series or what, and what years in particular. While he's been stuck on 240s, he drove a friends 940 turbo wagon and was so impressed with the performance, he's considering straying from the 240's and I'd like to find out and get him one, just to make him happy.   Next, if you have opinions on the best way to run one down, I'm listening.   Thanks alot for your help, you guys are super!  teresa chamberlain

Teresa, The 940 Turbo wagon will be the best bet because you can get on up to 1995.  240 Turbo Wagons were done in 1985.  The rubber hoses are prone to melting but thats a normal occurance.  The car in general is awesome.  If you keep the services up, the car will last for years.  The Turbos rarely go bad.  Im not saying that they dont, but the major cause of turbo failure is not servicing.  The 850 turbo wagons are awesome but have expensive things that go bad on them.  I would suggest Auto Trader.com or look in the IPDUSA.com classifed section.  They are in Oregon but that is the Volvo capital of the U.S., Hope this helped you.  Roger

Answer
Teresa, first, thank you for the kind words.  Its people like you that keep me doing this service.  Im not qualified to know the ins and outs of the toyota camry but from what I have heard, they are pretty reliable.  Like I said before, the 940 will be your best bet.  Stay away from the XC70.  The V70 wagon is a great car but like the 850's, they have their quirks with the A/C and brakes.  The 960 wagons are nice cars but too many electrical issues.  I dont have the cost per mile data but fuel economy isnt the best but it isnt horrible either.  Expect about 21/22 in city and highway will vary from 25-35 depending on your driving and foot(HAHA).  You cant go wrong with Volvo's 4 cylinder engines.  If a timing belt breaks, you just replace it and you are on your way.  With the new engines, if it breaks, serious damage will occur and expect 3-4 thousand in repairs.  Let me know how it works out for you.  Roger
