Volvo Repair: 1991 Volvo 740 Tune up, intake manifold gasket, vacuum hoses

Question
Bilbo,

Which is the number 1 cylinder on a 1991 Volvo 740?  I want to set the timing. Also, how do I set the engine RPM? I have replaced the spark plugs and it runs well but it hesitates when starting out.

Answer
Hey Quinn..
I'll assume you have a 4cylinder engine...in which case it's the first...closest to the radiator..
If it's a V-6...you'll have to call your fav.Volvo service dept...or look it up on the internet.
If the car runs smooth above the 1500 rpm chances are it could be old leaking fuel injectors   that has lost their ability to spray fuel at low rpm's..if you use regular gas and have over 125,000 miles..other reasons may well be the answer.
Timing must be done with a timing light...and furthermore..it's unlikely that your timing has gone out of the proper setting.
Other reasons...improper gap on spark plugs...leak in vacuum hoses...or on intake manifold/gasket.
Sounds like you may be a little inexperienced in doing most of these jobs...remember..if you order the Wrong part..and it dosen't change engine operation..they'll never give you your money back. You could end up paying 100"s and not fix the problem.
So Quinn, take the car to a repairshop that knows Volvo and get their opinion..you can always replace the old part and save money that way...not on diagnosis.
     Happy motoring,
