Volvo Repair: Engine Problem?, volvo 740 gle, jumper wire

Question
I have an 89 volvo 740 gle, 16 valve with 130,000 miles.  The engine runs fine but something happened and my A/C stoped working. I took it to a A/C shop and they said the A/C works fine. The compressor keeps cycling off and on. So I bypassed the low and high side and connected the A/C compressor directly to the battery. What happened next I never seen before. The compressor stayed on but the engine started to lose RPM,s so I held the throttle open to about 3000 RPM,s and the belts came to a complete stop and I could smell rubber burning. But the engine was still going at 3000 RPM,s. I then took off my jumper wire that was going to the compressor and the engine went back to normal. I know the compressor takes more power to turn but not to stop the engine. It is a brand new compressor I thought it was that but it was'nt. I will check to see if the alt. and p/s and water pump are spining freely. Any suggestions you have will help me.Thanks Larry

Answer
Hello,
to understand somethings with your ways is no easy, at least for me, I can not decide what the problem is according to your diagnostic way.
However, it seems to me there should be a compressor problem, or climate fan problem. The main problem is I think climate not engine, so when you have problem about climate (when AC stops), try to hit onto AC Compressor with a long stick, if the AC starts to work again, that means Compressor has problem. Please try to do this.
