Volvo Repair: 87 740 turbo wagon turned, started, sputtered, died!, liquid heat, turbo wagon

Question
I have an 87 740 turbo wagon- I rarely drive it these days and hadn't driven it for a about a week or more.   Started it up quite easily, then it sputtered and died.  I put liquid heat in the tank remove possible moisture.  It still won't start.
I would like to know where to begin- I replaced the untertray relay about a year ago.  I would like to know where to start.  Is it true that the pumps and filter are rarely at fault?  I have never replaced them.  Thanks for your time!

Answer
first would be to check for spark and fuel to see which one is missing.there could be many things causing this.rarely does not mean never.I have put in quite a few pumps especially the one in the tank and the hose for the one in the tank breaks inside the tank.
