Volvo Repair: Speed, volvo 940 gl, volvo 940

Question
Thanks so much for your reply. The relay was changed last month. So would it then for sure be a bad solenoid?
Over the week-end I noticed that the car does touch 85 or more but with the RPM whirring at perhaps 3,500 or so.

What is the top speed on a '92 Volvo 940 GL?  Did anyone ever complain about poor power?  I used to drive an American 3.8 L, 6 cyl earlier which went silent and effortless at 85 mph with the RPM at about 2,600 so I find it a bit hard to get used to this one.

Thanks a lot for your time and counsel.

With gratitude,
Glen

Hello Regis!

My '92 Volvo 940 GL runs superb, however that's uptil about 65 mph. At 70, the RPM hits a disproportionate 3000 RPM and it looks like 85 might be the top speed for my car! Beyond 70 mph, the RPM is a bit discomforting and at around 80 mph it feels like the RPM is more than the speed that the car is being pushed at . (this is a second hand I bought, and it did run into an accident checking by the dent-work on the driver's side of the door)

Would could be the reason? Like I said, till 65 mph, the RPM of 2000 - 2,500 makes sense as the ride is smooth, but beyond that, the RPM sings one tone and the speed another.

The belts, cap & rotor, oil and filters, transmission fuel, sparks have all been changed.

Thanks for the consideration.

Cordially

Glen

Answer -
the overdrive may not be engaging.this could be from a bad relay or possibly a bad overdrive solenoid.it will need to be looked at for a proper diagnosis.

Answer
if this car is a non turbo reginea fuel system they were somewhat sluggish on acceleration.you would need to check for power to the solenoid to see if it is getting power if it is have someone click the button and see if you hear it click if it doea not clik then I would replace it.
