Cadillac: COOLING SYSTEM, coolant systems, heater hoses

Question
I HAVE A 1992 SEVILLE STS.I HAVE A 20 MILE RIDE TO WORK AND AS I WAS ABOUT HALF WAY THE GAUGE WOULD READ "COOLANT HOT" AND "IDLE ENGINE" AND THEN I WOULD GET A WARNING BELL .OF COURSE I WOULD HAVE TO STOP.FLUID LEVELS WERE O.K.,WATER PUMP IS NEW,AND NO MILKSHAKE LIKE OIL.SO I REPLACED THE THERMOSTAT AND GOT A NEW RADIATOR.SO NOW AS I'M DRIVING I KEEP AN EYE ON THE TEMPERTURE AND IT READS BETWEEN 187 &248 DEGREES.ONCE IN A WHILE I WILL GET "COOLANT HOT" BUT AFTER ABOUT A MINUTE TEMPS WOULD DROP TO ABOUT 205 DEGREES. DO YOU THINK I OVERLOOKED SOMETHING? P.S. THANKS FOR YOUR ADVICE ON OTHER ISSUES. OTHERS HAVE ASKED YOU QUESTIONS THAT I COULD RELATE TO AND YOU (TOM JOY) HAVE ALWAYS BEEN EXTREMELY HELPFUL.

Answer
I hope you did a coolant systems flush BEFORE you installed the NEW radiator so as to flush out any junk that may have accumulated within the cooling chambers of the engine, heater hoses and the heater core.

Normal engine temp is approx 220 degrees. I would recommend that you replace the COOLANT HOT temperature SENDER. NOT the COOLANT SENSOR, The COOLANT SENDER of which is what turns ON the COOLANT HOT light.

A LOT of debris collects in the bottom of the heater core which is why you always flush the system. Now you may have pumped some of that debris back into your new radiator.

let me know.
