Cadillac: 91 Sedan Deville wont start, dry cell battery, fuse box

Question
I just bought a 91 Sedan Deville with 89,000 miles from a used car dealership for $2,400 cash (sticker was $3,000). I am the second owner and it seem to be in all most perfect condition.  When taking the test drive the car ideled rought but seem to run perfect. I got the car inspected at Persision Tune before I bought it.  They said it needed a basic tune up and fluid changes, new catalytic converter, E48 which is EGR system, and the water pump leaks.  I thought I was getting a great deal with the repairs it needed so I bought the car.  On the first full day I drove it, it would stall a little when I turned corners but I would just let off the gas then lightly apply the gas again and it was fine.  The second day I changed the spark plugs, cap, and roater which all looked to be very warn and the car ran fine.  On the third day after driving for about an hour I parked the car and turned it off,  I didn't like my parking job so I was going to move it but it wouldn't turn over.  Tried again 3 hours later and it started fine.  I went home and installed a new Vortex (dry cell battery) that I had bought 6 months earlier.  I had to jump start it but it ran fine.  I drove it 10 miles pulled up at a friends house and it died on me.  Thinking it was the alternator I jumped started again, the car would start for 2 seconds then it would die.  I tried 4 or 5 times and it did the same thing.  That night I charge my battery and tried it again and this time it wouldn't turn over at all even with a jump and I don't hear the starter clicking.  All the interior light and radio work and the head lights are very bright.  When turning the key to start the dash lights go dim but the interior lights and door lights don't dim at all.  A friend told me about "lot rought" within the computer so we tried reseting the computer by holding the battery cables together but that didn't change anything.  All the fuses in the interior fuse box are good.  All the fuses in 2 fuses box under the hood are good.  A friend said it could still be a bad alternator not allowing it to start.  I haven't taken that in to check yet.  I am getting power to the starter but am unsure if the starter is good or bad.  Could it be the EGR system?  I just thought of checking the distributor, maybe I did something there when I changed the cap and roater but I have changes lots of those in my life time.  I want to do as much as I can before taking it to a mechanic.  PLEASE HELP!!!

Answer
Please excuse the upcoming rampage, BUT whoever this FRIEND is that you quoted:

A friend told me about "lot rought" within the computer so we tried reseting the computer by holding the battery cables together but that didn't change anything.

IS TOTALLY OUT OF HIS MIND.

There is NO SUCH THING as "lot rought" !!!!!!!!.

Putting the battery cables together has got to be one of the WORST possible DISASTERS that you could ever do to a COMPUTERIZED vehicle.

You may have and most likely have DAMAGED and or DESTROYED many of the electronic components within the computer system. If I had a friend who EVER made a stupid statement as that He would be in the county morgue by morning.

You do some basic looking around while I try and CALM DOWN and e-mail me tomorrow at:

meperganfortis@msn.com

and I will help you get this vehicle running again. Do NOT be surprised if the costs of psrts exceeds the price you paid for the vehicle.

This is the worst case of ignorance via putting the battery cables TOGETHER in almost 30 years as a professional automotive diagnostic technician I have ever heard being done to a computerized vehicle.

I STILL can't believe your FRIEND would EVER even THINK of such a thing.

get back to me tomorrow.
