Question   ok well i bought a 1981 cadillac and the Electronic Climate controll Dosent turn on ive checked just about every fuse, switched head units etc. so im lost if u could tell me which fuses or what ones i need 2 check over agin and what else i can do 2 get it fixed thanks for your time Dominic
Answer   First the bad news. In my opinion, The 1981 Cadillac, Unless you have the Cimmaron, Wwas the # 1 top manufactured DISASTER that Cadillac EVER put on the market. This car had more problems than you can imagine as I worked on these vehicles when the were brand new at a Cadillac dealership and I aged 5 years with all the complaints.

Your Cadillac if I am not mistaken had the engine that switched from 8 cylinders to 6 cylinders to 4 cylinders while driving it at highway speeds. Most unethical used car places modified the engine so it only ran on all 8 cylinders all the time.

Am I correct so far ?.

OK, My apologies, I forgot the had a v-6 in 1981, I must be getting old as I just plain forgot about the v-6.

Please elaborate in more detail about the ECC panel. What else does not operate correctly ?.

What repairs has been done on this vehicle in the past and what was the LAST repair ?.

Write me a long drawn out question as every piece of information is VITAL for an accurate response.

Again, My apologies as I forgot about the V-6 option.

well i just got it and im not sure what repairs have been done in the past it has been idleing very high and dosent seem 2 want 2 kick down the interior lights and the door locks are hooked up 2 a toggle switch so those are gonna fixed and just the Climate controll dosent turn on theres no display on it i have tried 2 switch the head units but it still didnt work so it dosent show any codes, the miles per gallon and the tempeture and the passanger side wiper arm is off track or broke so thats about whats wrong with everything with the car. and thats about all i know with the E.C.C.

Answer
The ECC control head is ONLY a display as in comparison to, Let's say your TV in the house. If the main power supply failes within the TV and you just replace the picture tube (DISPLAY), See where I am going with this ?.

The ECC is now your picture tube so we have to find the component (power supply) that operate the display.

In most cases the display failure is caused by the vehicles ECM (computer) or the A/C-heater CONTROL MODULE or it could be the A/C-Heater POWER MODULE located in the engine compartment mounted near the firewall on the heater core/A/C evaporator plastic housing.

I am a lousy guesser and it get's VERY expensive TRYING parts in HOPES of replacing the right one, Which is why I do NOT offer "WAGS" (Wild A** Guesses.

Since you don't know the past repair history of the vehicle you have no idea who did what to the electronics of the vehicle and your only solution is to have a reputable repair facility do the diagnostics.

As to the interior lights, There is what is called an ILLUMINATED ENTRY MODULE which has a long history of failure and when it goes bad the interior lights remain ON all the time, Thus probably the reason for the toggle switch.

As to the power door locks that could be one of many faulty items within the lock circuit.

As to getting DISGNOSTIC codes via the ECC control panel you cannot do it on the V-6 engine as it is carburated an NOT fuel injected like the 8-6-4 engine is.

There is a small black DIAGNOSTIC CONNECTOR under the dash that requires 2 terminals to be jumpered together and you count the number and sequence of flashing of the CHECK ENGINE light to get the codes.

A NEW ECM (computer can run approx $175 and a NEW A/C-Heater CONTROL MODULE can run you $225.
