Dodge: Check engine light., dodge ram slt laramie, dodge ram slt

We have a 2001 Dodge Ram SLT Laramie pickup. The check engine light came on so we took it to a mechanic. He put it on the computer and said it was the gas cap, not screwed on tight enough or something. ($20.00 to feel like a fool!) The light went off but it came back on the next day, we had not messed with the cap, so we took it back. He said it was still the gas cap ( no charge this time). Anyway, the light is still on. Any ideas or could we maybe just need a new gas cap?

I'm sorry but i had to laugh when i read this.When the engine light is on it saves a code,so when you hook the truck to a computer it will tell you what code it was.It is most likely a sensor of some sort.Did he happen to give you the code number?No i don't think the gas cap will solve the problem.I'd go back and ask him what the code number was and get back to me and i will tell you what the manual says about the code.And it won't cost you $20.00.I'm here to help not shaft people.
