Ford: rev up while in park, cruise control system, strange occurance

Question
I have a 98 Ford Escort SE sport with Automatic. When I place it into park, after about a second or so, the engine revs up to about 1500-2000 RPM. It keeps there for about 2-3 seconds and then settles down. In itself, it is not a problem, but could this indicate something serious? Thanks in advance.

Answer
hi martin.

this is quite a strange occurance, but a few things come to mind.

next time it happens, check to see if the gas pedal moves.  if so, i believe it's got something to do with your cruise control system.  you see, martin, in your car there are two cables that are each attached to the throttle valve.  one is connected to the gas pedal, and the other is connected to the vacuum actuator.  when the cruise control is engaged, the actuator moves the cable connected to the pivot, which adjusts the throttle. but it also pulls on the cable that is connected to the gas pedal -- this is why your pedal moves up and down when the cruise control is engaged. of course, the vacuum actuator is controlled by a computer.  you may want to have a full check done on that controller and all the parts i just mentioned.

if the gas pedal doesn't move, then your throttle valve seems to be moving independantly, which means one or both of those cables is loose.  definitely have the whole intake system looked at.

either way, i doubt it is a majorly seious problem. it'll waste a little gas, but that's all for now.  just get it looked at in the right spots that i mentioned.  i sure hope that i have helped.
