GM-GMC: labor hours to replace a/c compressor, 2004 chevy z71, liter

Question
I have a 2004 Chevy Z71, K1500, 5.3 liter.  The service department at the local dealer found a leak in the a/c compressor and recommend to replace it.  The total cost is $985.  $400 is the part and $500 for labor.  The service advisor claims it takes 5 hours to remove and replace.  5 hours seems high.  Or is it? Thanks!

Answer
That does seem a little high.  It would be closer if that included diagnosis, but still a touch high.  If the system is empty already, there should be no problem with you replacing the compressor yourself and taking it in to have the system recharged.  Just be sure to add the appropriate amount of oil to the new compressor, the instructions are generally included with the new compressor.  If you do want to replace it yourself, repost and I will reply with the service procedure.
hope this helps.
