GM-GMC: 2000 CK3500 2WD 5.7 Vortec 26000 miles, oil gauge, stablizer

Question
recently my oil gauge keeps dropping intermittently to 0 psi and never goes over 40 psi, when this was first happening i thought it was a sending unit but i soon realized that i could tell the engine was starving for oil during 0 psi times, i have stopped using the truck as of today hopefully i haven't done to much damage, i want to take off the pan and replace the oil pump! would i be wasting my time and money and would this be the right course of action? i do not beat the engine, is this common for such low miles?

Answer
I have not heard of any problems like this but what a would do is pull of the oil pan and see if you have any visable damage and see if there is any metal shaveings in your oil pan if all looks good then I would replace your oil pump and hope all goes well.
I also would recomend putting some Lucas brand oil stablizer in it if you do replace the oil pump
