GM-GMC: fuel pump, shade tree mechanic, dirty one

Question
Harry,
My 89 GMC K2500 5.7 L suddenly failed to start after being run just hours earlier in the day. It starts when fuel is poured into the carb but runs only until the that fuel is used up. I suspect my fuel pump is dead and I understand it's probably mounted inside the fuel tank. Is this something a shade tree mechanic (myself) should tackle or should I get it towed to a shop? Thanks.

Answer
I would not attempt it unless you can drain, or nearly drain, the tank.  If you can do that, the rest of the job is not too bad, particularly if you can get another person to help you with the bulky tank.

Replace the hoses on the top of the fuel tank if you perform the pump replacement.

Read the service manual for the exact steps required.  The job is not too hard but is often a dirty one.
