GM-GMC: 1983 Blazer ignition lock cylinder, free wheels, auto parts stores

Question
Will I need any special tools other then a steering wheel puller to access the ignition switch on my '83 Blazer? It appears as though the screw that retains it in place has backed out, or at least that is my guess, as the switch now just free wheels inside the column.

Answer
Ron,

There is a tool that is necessary, to compress the spring at the top of the steering column, in order to remove and replace a snap ring.

The snap ring retains the horn contact ring and the ring blocks access to anything further down the steering column.

You can buy the tool (or maybe rent it) at most auto parts stores for about $20.00.

I have removed and replaced the snap rings in GM columns without the tool, but it is very difficult to do.  Reinstallation is the hardest part and will take two people if you do not use the tool.
