Mitsubishi: 1999 mitsubshi eclispe rs transmission, dashboard lights, mitsubshi

Question
I just bought the car and off and on, the car will not shift out of first gear. It is an automatic, chrysler transmission (I am told). I have had a tranny shop put it on computer for codes. He has replaced the computer twice and it still does it.  It doesn't do it all the time.  I can hit a bump and the dashboard lights all light up.  Previously only part of them are lit.  Then the car will not shift out of first. My husband has had the codes checked and the check engine light cleared.  The other night, I was pulling out of the gas station and it was a small bump.  The car did not shift and seemed to have a lot more muscle.  The engine is only a 2. something.  Sorry, I don't know for sure. A dealership said it is in fail safe mode.  My husband said that turning the car off and on three times would reset the car.  But it keeps going back to fail safe.  It shifted good for about a week and a half until I hit the little bump on Friday.  It was a little decline bump.  Any suggestions?

Answer
You have a 1) short in the dash 2) a bad speed sensor or solenoid block. I feel the tranmssions shop you took it to is not very sharp because it is an easy repair. If you have a Cottman Transmission near you, I suggest taking it there. They wil diagnose the problem for free. Get the code numbers from the technician and resubmit to me those code numbers and I will tell you what is what. FYI the transmission is a Mitsubishi built F4A42. Used in that car from 96 to 02. A chrysler built junk 41TE was used from 95 to 98 with the 2.0L.
