Pontiac: Grand AM stuck in Park, patience is a virtue, autohelp

My daughters 96 Grand AM, after starting, will not move from park?  On a resent trip the trans would have problems (slow) going up hills. I checked fuiled and added three quarts before it registered on the stick.  The car has run fine since (2 months...).  I checked fluid again tonight (after trying to get it out of Park) and had to add three quarts again.  There are no signs of a leak?  Still won't move from Park. Thank you for you help.
