Saab: 96 saab 900 convertable electrics, saab 900, electrical fault

Question
Hi, I have a 96   900 convertable (non turbo)  2.0 Automiatic
It has developed an intermittant electrical fault.
Sometimes when you are driving its just turns its self off..
No electrical power at all and engine stops.
Very dangerous.
Sometimes it will start straight away, and others take 10-15 minutes.
When it fails to start all the dash lights are only semi illuminated.
after a few turns of the key, the lights will be all bright and the car will start.

So, when it fails to start  "all" of the normal ignition lights are on, but they are only very dim.
Then, for no reason they apparently are all fully lit, and the car will start .
Any help please?
Some people have said that it may be the ignition switch?

Simon.

Answer
Simon:
As noted in my profile, my hands on experience is limited to the older 900's; The following is thus a general comment. Since SAAB construction tends to be conservative, it will likely apply, however.
I suspect that one of the main relays is beginning to fail; these are plug in devices found (on the older 900's)over the left front wheel well in a black enclosure along with the fuses. And yes, it is possibly the ignition switch, but typically less likely. The relays are identified so that you should have no trouble in locating the correct one(s).

  Hope this helps,
