Saab: 94 saab 900s brake lights, brake light switch, saab 900s

Question
QUESTION: i have a 94 900s and the brake lights did work. i replaced the brake light switch, now the lights won't go off. the switch is adjusted all the way out but the pedal doesnt seem to touch the switch. also the car won't go into gear with the brake lights on. what did i do wrong?

ANSWER: Paul:
Can you clarify your comment? I am assuming your brake lights suddenly stopped working. If the lights stay on, it suggests a short somewhere or a defective (stuck-on) switch. I suggest starting by removing one of the switch terminals and seeing if the lights go out...if so, a defective switch.  If not, a short somewhere....OR: Could it be the wrong switch...normally ON instead of normally OFF AND with the wrong physical dimensions?
I can only speculate, but a place to start the investigation.

  Hope this helps,

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: yes the lights stopped working. i replaced the switch and now they do not go off. if i push the brake pedal down slightly the lights go off, but if i release the pedal they stay on. when the pedal is slightly pressed and the lights are off i can put the car in gear, otherwise the shifter is locked. other than the lights not working, everything with the car worked fine. the car is an automatic

Answer
Paul:
The brake switch controls 2 functions; (a): Turns on the brake lights when depressed and (b): Releases the shifter to enable going into gear. Strangely, you have the opposite, i. e., lights ON, shift LOCKED! Since I am not personally familiar with your model[As noted in my profile] I can only speculate as to a bad switch OR faulty wiring somewhere. If your brakelight switch has 3 or more terminals, its most likely the switch. If it has 2 terminals only, it is most likely the wiring.
