Volkswagen: Oil Leak, tracer dyes, splatter pattern

Question
I have recently found my 1969 beetle to of started leaking oil,,there is no visible oil in the engine compartment but oil is found on the underbody.when i stop it leaks for a while then stops, does anyone know what it could be,or where the oil lak is coming from

Answer
The other expert could answer this question much better, but he's away for a while.  I really don't know old VWs so you may want to re-ask this question when he returns.  I will answer it based on general knowledge, but he could give specifice recommendations based on vast beetle experience.

Fluids generally drip down with two exceptions.  If wind (either fan or speed generated) is present, they can go anywhere.  If they drip or run onto a component that is close to another, they can wick upward.  The key to finding the leak is to trace backwards.  If there is oil on the undercarriage, look ahead of the splatter pattern for where the leak is dripping and then trace it upward to the source.  You'll know you found the source if everything above it is clean.  There may be pooled oil there too.  This all assumes that the engine compartment is relatively clean.  If it is grimy, it's nearly impossible to trace leaks.  For extremely difficult leaks, you can buy fluorescent tracer dyes that make the leak stand out with a black light.  Make sure you tell the auto parts store what the fluid is, because there are different formulas for each.
