Volkswagen: 1988 cabriolet issues, adirondack auto brokers, key shop

Question
QUESTION: Strong smell of gas from the back?
Cruise not working and air no working?
oild light comes on during idle?
The ignition switch gets stuck once in a while where can I get one?

ANSWER: thats a lot to handle at one time... so lets start with the last one.  Ignition switch get stuck?  Do you mean the electrical part or the key part?  If you need the ignition cylinder with a new key, I would say the dealer.  If you need a new key, I would say have any key shop make you one.  For the electrical part of the switch, also the dealer.  There are many places online to order parts from as well, just do a search.  I like to use vwparts.com and adirondack auto brokers in ny.  Both parts places have awesome people working for them and ship fast.  (plus they are tons cheaper than the dealer)
Start with that and let me know what you find.  Also, do a search for TSB's for your year car.  There is a recall out for cabriolets with leaking gas tanks.  If your car falls into the vin cut off... you will save HUGE@@@

QUESTION: The key descides not to turn and I have 4 different keys so I think I am just going to replace the ignition. Called a VW dealer and my VIN is not under the recall category, but I am having the place I purchased it from double check it. That is a big concern of mine.  Thanks for the info.
What are the usual problems for the air and cruise not working?
I thought about just buying a new switch for the cruise but do not want to waste the money or time on it if it is a more major issue.  The air I would like to fix down the road but again do now want to fix the wrong thing.

Answer
Before I get ahead of myself or you...do not trust a dealer for a tsb or recall on this old of a vehicle.... they would not repair any of mine...(i had six cars that fell under this ) until I printed the info from an online tsb/recall holder and walked in and said..."here is the info..I would like the work performed now"....  VW of america called me and told me that the work was performed and that the car was ready... the dealer never called me back.  hehe.   So do your own homework first.  As far as the cruise, do you have basic hand tools and knowledge of a dvom (multimeter)? and do you have the robert bentley repair manual.
lets start their... cruise isn't a bad fix normally.
thanks again,
