Volkswagen: electrical reconnections, starter solenoid, reconnections

Question
Hey Ron, I use any and all tech manuals for info.  I have Bentley, Hayes and Muir's books available.  I took a rebuild out of one bus to go into another bus and thought I marked the wires for reconnection, but lo and behold, no indication of what came off what, bus-to-bus.  What attaches to the coil and on what pole, what attaches to the blower, and what attaches to the regulator?  I think I have things right, but don't want to flame on when first cranking over.  Thanks, Blane

Answer
Hey Blane,

I'm not sure what year your bus is, but I will give you the low-down for a '76 era bus since you mentioned that you have the blower on top.

Coil: + or #15 terminal:   Double Black wire and Single Black wire:

1) 1 black wire leads to fuse 11 back to the front
2) 1 black wire leads to the double relay if it's fuel injected.
3) The single black wire leads to the fuse on the left side for the reverse lights.

Coil - or #1:  1 Green Wire and one white wire

1) Green wire goes to condenser on distributor
2) White wire is for the fuel injection to time the injector pulses.

Blower Fan:

Terminal "M" on the little relay: red wire to fuse in engine compartment and than to terminal 30 on starter solenoid.

Terminal A on fan relay is a blue wire that goes to plug marked D+ on regulator

Terminal 31 on fan relay is a brown and white wire which leads to the heater lever under the dashboard.

Terminal J on the relay is black and yellow and leads to the motor itself

The ground for the motor is brown and connects to the fan housing body.

Regulator:

Red from alternator connects into D+ on Regulator along with a blue wire that goes to charge light in dash.

Other red from alternator goes to the solenoid terminal marked "30"

Brown and Green from Regulator D- and DF go to negative on the alternator.

This should get you motoring.  Best bet is to connect the battery quickly to make sure nothing smokes.  IF all goes well, put the key on 'on' to ensure you have all the proper idiot lights illuminated.

Good Luck, I'm sure you will have no problem!

Ron
