Hi Umer,

I.
I sent you a reply via e-mail in regard to the Air Conditioning.

Most beetles do not catch fire, although some do.  I'll give you some of the primary reasons and how to minimize your risk.

- Because the beetles are now an average of 30 years old, the fuel lines start to dry out and crack with age.  It is important to replace them.  Should a line break in the engine compartment, it just takes a small spark to ignite a fire.  Further, replacing the lines on Fuel-Injected beetles are VERY IMPORTANT.   These are high-pressure lines; many people replace fuel injected hoses with regular fuel line.  These hoses will eventually burst.  You must always replace fuel injected VW hoses with high-pressure lines!

- The emission hoses in the front of the car (where the tank is) should all be replaced as a matter of maintenance.  Secondly, the filler hose that leads to the tank should be checked for cracks and given the 'sniff' test.  If it fails either, replace it.  This could potentially cause a fire in the trunk area if left unattended.

- If the car is improperly tuned-up, the engine could run very hot and cause a fire.

- The battery under the rear set could potentially cause a fire.  If someone is sitting over the battery and the terminals are not covered; the springs from the seat can make contact with the battery and ignite the horsehair stuffing on the bottom of the seat.

- When doing a routine tune-up, make sure all of the bolts (ie the Carb) are tight.  This could prevent any leaks, loss of oil, overheating conditions.

- Most important note on fires: Carry a good fire extinguisher in your VW!  Have it accessible and routinely check it to ensure it is charged up.
