Volkswagen: 1974 Volkswagon Ignition, lock smith, lock cylinder

I had a key made - from the door lock key code - whih works the doors fine - but not the ignition.  How do I remove the igniton without a key?  I have pulled off the housing and can not find a retainer button or any way to remove the ignition switch.  Any suggestions?

Hi Stacy,

Aside from removing the entire steering column,  the best thing you can do is have a lock-smith come over and make you an ignition key.   There is a lock mechanism inside that will not allow you to remove the lock cylinder unless it is on the "on" position.
