Volvo: Transmission, neutral safety switch, microswitches

Question

Hello Ray,

I cannot start my 95 850 glt if the shift is in "N" position. but it starts without any problems when in position "P".. what might be the cause? I have found out that there are two different microswitches in this car.. one embedded in the auto trans control arm console and another one in the engine compartment.. which one do you think is failing?

thanks

Answer
Mete,
The gear position sensor is on top of the trans. That is also used as a neutral safety switch. With the scan tool on the car in the trans monitor mode do you see the signals change as the shifter is moved? That is a good test for the gear sensor. Also read the codes in the trans system.
