Volvo: 1999 Volvo S80 Handbrake System, volvo s80, 1999 volvo s80

Question
I've noticed that when parked on slope in "N" gear (automatic) and pulled the handbrake (hard, all the way to the top), the car still slides.

How could I self-test the handbrake system to see if it's working?

How many "clicks" should the handbrake for this model have?

Is there any other signs that the handbrake may not be functioning?

Is the handbrake system for 1999 Volvo S80 on a disc or drum system?

What could be the possible problem of the handbrake system?  How can I check and eliminate them?

Are handbrakes usually checked in regular servicing at authorised service centres?

Answer
Roy,
Test it by slow slow speed put the car in neutral pull up the handbrake, much as you have. There is an adjustment for the handle at the handle close to the pivot point. Five to seven clicks is normal. The brake has shoes in the rear that hold onto the discs center portion. So if you removed the caliper and the rotor you would see the e-brake shoes. Dealers and shops should check the parking brake at most of the larger services, although asking for the service might be a good idea. I do not think that removing the e-brake is a good idea.
