Volvo: Limp Home Mode 1993 Volvo 940 Turbo, emission control system, fuel pump relay

Question
QUESTION: My Volvo 1993 940 Turbo Estate has developed a fault, when driving the Fault in exhaust emission control system indicator dashboard light comes on and the engine then cuts out, after a short while I can start the engine again but it then stays in Limp Home Mode and the indicator lamp stays on, I have checked the onboard diagnostic unit which reads on socket 2, 1-1-1 & on socket 6, 1-4-4, Volvo dealer has said it could be the Ignition Module or Fuel Relay Module or the Crank case Sensor causing the problem, without buying all of these very expensive items and replacing them, have you any other ideas what may be causing this problem, I could buy all of the suggestions from Volvo and still have the same problem, I am very frustrated with this problem , can you help please !!!!
ANSWER: Barrie,
The code you have is for load signal absent/missing. I have never seen that cause a stalling vehicle. If the flywheel pick up was bad I would suspect there to be a code. Now I do know that the fuel pump or the relay will not set a code. That being the case fuel system relay, wiring, pump, fuse. Don't over look the in tank pump. Hope that is enough help. Sometimes the problem needs to happen before being traced and fixed.

QUESTION: My local Volvo Dealer still insists that a probable cause in 9 out of 10 cases is the ignition module, followed by Fuel Pump Relay or Crank Case Sensor, I am still confused about this, have you any further comments or thoughts on this please

Answer
Barrie,
The way I test is first check for codes and follow those. No codes will most likely mean the power supply to the fuel system. The weakest point in that system is the fuel pump relay. There are many reports that the ignition module also cause a like problem. A crank sensor (flywheel pick up) should set a code that will be stored in the ignition system control unit.
