Volvo: getting it started..., volvo 740 gle, fuel pump relay

Question
Ok... I changed the ECU. still nothiing. So I know the ECU I had was still good, the fuel pumps are good, the coil is good. You say it's a wire? Well... I found the wire. It's a cable that runs from the Distributor & goes through the firewall. It has an electric connector at the end (just like the connector that connects to the ECU). It meets with the Power Stage(Ignition Amplifier) but does not connect with it. The Power Stage wire & the wire I found are bound by tape & tubing together to go through the firewall. I don't know if it goes to the computer or straight to the ignition itself in the steering wheel? Can you help me out with that? Thanks.

Ok... I took care of the Power Stage. I found out that my computer is burned out. Is that called the ECM? Can you tell me where the computer is? And what is the technical term for that "ignition computer?" Thanks a lot for your help thus far!

-----Question-----
Hi.  I have a 1987 Volvo 740 GLE. I replaced my fuel pump relay, distributor, ignition coil & spark plugs & wires. The ignition coil is firing, but my car still won't start. The fuel pump is working because I smell gas when I try to start it. Sometimes, (if I let the car sit long enough) it will start! But when it starts, it shuts off after a few seconds. Is there a fuse/relay for the ignition? Or is there anything else I should check?

Thank you.

Drew,
No fuse for the ignition. You then are losing spark when it stalls, yes? There is a pick up in the distributor. See if the wires are broken and or there is a lot of oil that leaked in there and shorted things out. You may want to pull the dist and plug it in and turn the key on spin the dist by hand and see if the injectors click. You may also have a bad power stage for the ignition system. That is a small unit mounted on the inner fender well either right by battery or the left by air filter, it has about a 6 wire connector.

Is the power stage connected to a computer? If so, would that computer go out as well?
-----Answer-----
Drew,
All the fuel injection controls are by the control unit and that is mounted inside the car right side behind the side kick panel. The power stage that I mentioned is with the ignition system and that control unit is above the steering column.

Drew,
Ignition control unit is the ECM the part number is possibly a 1336505. It is located above the steering column.
Used they sell for about $75.00.

Answer
Drew,
If you pull the dist and plug it in and turn on the key then spin the dist do the injectors click? Do you get a single spark? You may have a bad pick-up in the dist. The power stage is changed right? How does the wire harness look? A lot of them fail.
