Volvo: Starting Problems, mass air sensor, mass air flow

Thanks again Nigel. After taking to the dealership they replaced the ignition switch, as well as the throttle body sensor. They also looked into the check engine light. They found no codes for the MAF sensor or fuel injection sensor? They told me that Auto Zones OBDII reader doesn't work on Volvos. Anyways they fixed the problem and $447 dollars later I'm in the poor house.

Thanks Nigel, I have ben asking several auto mechanics in the area and they all seem to point to the ignition switch. Though I don't disagree with your statement about the sensor.

First off I would like to thank you for your time, it is very kind for you to offer your help. I'm asking this question of you for your expertise in electrical systems since I think thats where the problem is.

Problem: When I go to turn the car over, the key is in the II position the dash lights come on and a second later they go off and when I try to turn to position III(turn the car over) It just cranks. This is an intermitant problem, which at times doesn't have this problem. At times I can be driving and all of a sudden the whole car shuts down(power completly shuts off) and I end up stalling. Also I seem to be getting tremdous gas improvement. 340miles to the tank to 420 miles to the tank now. I did a OBDII diagnosis at autozone and it came back with two codes. 1)being the Mass Air Flow Leak, 2)being a Fuel Injection Sensor or something like that. These may not be the problem, I did the diagnosis two months ago. It's now to the point where my car just won't turn over. Any suggestions?

if it doesn't crank over thats a different problem- starter, relay , run down battery etc.   the first problem sounds like loose intake connections, so air is leaking in, this can cause serious problems, the mass air sensor measures the air coming in so the computer can inject the correct amount of fuel, if there is extra air leaking in between the sensor and engine it throws everything off.

they should be able to troubleshoot this quickly if they have proper tools, that is one of the things that can cause the problem

at least you fixed the problem, i like to steer clear of autozone myself ;)   but then again the dealer could be lying ;)   but they could be right who knows?   sensors are designed for a very long service life and they very rarely fail. unfortunatley you had 2 unrelated problems.
