Volvo: Volvo 240, cable sheath, giant pipe

Question
Jason - thanks for your help in advance!

I own an '88 Volvo 240 with auto trans. I know you can help me since the '80s Volvos are all so similar.

My kickdown cable seized and I'm trying to get it out through the transmission as the Hayne's Manual suggests. I drained the oil, dropped the pan and took out the filter, but I can still hardly see anything in there, except for the "hole" where I am supposed to pull the cable out of.

I am stuck on the following instruction from the book:
"Release the cable adjuster from the cable mounting bracket."
Is this at the transm. end or under the hood? I believe I already did this under the hood, but I can't be sure. Anyhow, the next step after that is to pull the cable out from the transm. end, but I can't see the cable down there.

Help, please. :)

Andy

Answer
I don't have much personal experience with the automatic kickdown cable, myself owning a manual.  But I did some searches on the web and found a set of more descripive instructions for removing the cable.  If these aren't enough, I would suggest also visiting www.brickboard.com.  These free forums have a search feature where you can find everything you need about kickdown cables from people who have had the same experiences as you.

Drain the transmission of fluid.
Unbolt the dipstick/filler tube from the transmission sump (may be "very" difficult and require a giant pipe wrench). More fluid will run out.
Unbolt and remove transmission pan. More fluid will run out.
Unbolt and remove the transmission filter. More fluid will run out. You now have access to the cable and tranny innards.
Have somebody fully extend the cable, this will rotate the internal valving fully. Clamp onto the rotating valve (where the cable attaches) with the narrow vise grips immobilizing the valving (it is spring loaded). With a second set of narrow pliers remove the cable end from its recess in the valve actuator.
Remove the cable & sheath - friction fit in transmission, bolt-on at throttle body.
Re-assembly is reverse of disassembly. Careful not to remove the vise grips until the new cable sheath is seated in the tranny and the cable end is attached to valving.
