4 Wheel Drive/SUVs: 2003 Chevy S-10 4WD Knocking, axle grease, torsion bars

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2003 Chevy S-10 4WD with approx 60000 miles on it.  I bought it last year and could feel a light knocking under the drivers side floor board and it would only happen on right hand turns.  Recently it has gotten worse and I can feel in consistently at slow speeds and when backing up.  My mechanic said it was my U-Joints which he replaced and it is still knocking. After further inspection, he now thinks it is due to an axle grease leak on the front left tire.  Any thoughts or suggestions?

ANSWER: Check the rubber mount on the torsion bars coming from the front wheels. They are notorious for going bad

QUESTION: Is that something that I could easily check or would I have to take it to his shop to do that?

Answer
All you have to do is crawl underneath the truck and you will see 2 long bars coming from the front lower control "A" arms to a crossmember under the drivers seat. Shake the bars up and down and see if that isn't the knocking you are hearing. These bars are your front springs, they twist to make the spring instead of having coils in the front so they can knock against the floor boards and rattle if the mounts are torn
