4 Wheel Drive/SUVs: 2004 GMC Yukone 4WD, service answer, routine service

QUESTION: The service 4wd light came on and has stayed on for 5 days.  Any suggestions on service?  Does this mean that the 4wd is going out or if it just needs a routine service check?  Any idea on cost for repair and/or service?

ANSWER: From a past question, I have knowledge of a problem general motors had with the 4 wheel drive switches on the dash. Usually replacing this will fix it right up and the part is about $60

QUESTION: So there is probably nothing wrong with the 4WD?  What happens if the 4WD actually goes out?  I have zero knowledge of what 4WD is for other than its nice to have it in the winter!

Answer
Typically the only issues you may see out of that particular truck will be the switch. But there is always a possible disaster. If the 4 wheel drive quits it won't stop the vehicle from driving normally, you just won't have the option of getting it out of a icy road if needed. Its also nice to have if you get stuck in the mud or have to pull a trailer up a big hill and don't want to spin the tires.
