Tips on Buying Cars: Sellin my car for parts, ford explorer sport, independent repair

Question
A used tranny is only $200-$300 really. I took it to one place they told me $1200. Then I took it to ford and they wouldn't put a used tranny in. If u know anyone who knows places where to look could u help me. Also could I go to a junkyard and pull a tranny out of a junked car?

Hi I was wondering if you could help me. I would like to sell my car for parts. The only thing that is wrong with it is my tranny. I have not one clue on how to mgo about this. I don't want to sell it to a junkyard because I think I coulg get more. I hope you can help me.

I would run an ad in an inexpensive local paper or classified publication.  If it's only a transmission needed then generally I'd ask about half to 2/3 of what the drivable cars like yours are bringing in the ads.
If you'll tell me the year, make and mileage I'll give you a ballpark.

My only other recommendation is to only sell the car whole.  If you start parting it out, you'll soon have something on your hands that even the junkyard will take for free.

Good luck!

Wow, I wasn't expecting to hear that.  Surprising that you'd want to junk a vehicle like that over a transmission.  You do know that a used transmission for that is only $200-$300 and a couple of hundred to swap it out.

If you really plan on selling it as is, I'd ask $750 - $1,200 depending on the mileage and condition.

Answer
Any good independent repair shop can install a used transmission.  The dealer should always be the last resort when it comes to repairs.  I hate to make such a blanket statement but after dealing with shops for 20 years, I feel that most dealers service departments are full of crooks.

Just look in the yellow pages under used auto parts and there should be plenty of yards who will pull the transmission and deliver it to your shop.
You can also call a couple of body shops and find out who the best used parts suppliers are in your area.

Good luck.
